March is National Reading Month in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2nd. Reading is the foundation of student success, and developing a love of reading can unlock a world of adventures to last a lifetime. Your PTA can help families support children’s literacy and love of reading by hosting a Family Reading Experience at your school.

The Family Reading Experience program from National PTA provides a ready-to-use toolkit of literacy activities to host in both English and Spanish, including:

  • Book Bingo
  • Build a Library
  • Connecting Families with Inclusive Books
  • Hosting a Visiting Author or Illustrator
  • Stage a Community Book Swap
  • Stage a Community Read
  • Stage a Virtual Bedtime Story

You’ll also find resources to share with your families, including suggested book lists, information on how to “read” a picture book to a young child, and potential collaboration resources for your Family Reading Experience events. Finally, you’ll also find a couple of Notes from the Backpack PTA podcast focused on literacy. Check out the National PTA Family Reading Experience page and start planning your event now.
